Juice Volunteers at Borough Market with Plan Zheroes to Fight Food Waste
How a morning of sorting veg reminded us why giving back matters
There's something about stepping away from your desk and doing something physical that resets you. Recently, the Juice team did exactly that. We headed down to Borough Market to volunteer with Plan Zheroes, also known as The Zero Food Waste Heroes, and spent the morning sorting surplus food for redistribution to local charities and food banks.
No spreadsheets. No screens. Just crates of food and a shared sense of purpose.
What Plan Zheroes Actually Does
If you haven't heard of Plan Zheroes, here's the short version. They connect businesses that have surplus food with local charities and community organisations that need it. Simple concept, massive impact.
Their flagship project alone has saved over 500 tonnes of food from going to waste. That's food that would have ended up in landfill, now feeding families and individuals who need it most.
They operate right out of Borough Market, one of London's most iconic food destinations, which makes the whole thing feel even more grounded. The food is right there. The need is right there. Plan Zheroes just builds the bridge between the two.
What We Did on the Day
Our job was pretty hands on. We sorted through surplus food, checked what was still good to go, and helped package it up for redistribution to local food banks and charities.
It sounds straightforward, and honestly it is. But that's kind of the point. You don't need a complicated strategy or a huge budget to make a difference. You just need to show up and be willing to get stuck in.
The team loved it. There's something about working side by side on something that has nothing to do with your day job that brings people together in a different way. Conversations were different. Energy was different. Everyone left feeling like they'd actually done something that mattered.
Why This Matters to Us at Juice
At Juice, we talk a lot about community and making an impact. But words only go so far. Volunteering with Plan Zheroes was a chance to put that into practice.
Food waste is one of those problems that feels overwhelming when you look at the numbers. In the UK alone, around 9.5 million tonnes of food is wasted every year. But when you break it down to a morning at Borough Market, sorting through crates and knowing exactly where that food is going, it suddenly feels very manageable.
Making a difference doesn't have to be complicated. It can start with a single morning and a willingness to roll up your sleeves.
What's Next
We're already planning our next volunteering day. This isn't a one off for us. It's something we want to build into the way we work as a team.
If you're running a business and looking for a way to give back that actually feels real, we'd genuinely recommend reaching out to Plan Zheroes. They make it easy to get involved, and the impact is immediate and tangible.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is just show up. We're glad we did. 🍎
